Bangkok: More than just Malls, Markets and Foodie’s Paradise
Famous for its street eats and shopper spots, Bangkok is also an amazing cultural destination for history buffs and urbanites alike. However, for those who love exploring old neighbourhoods, we have just the place for you! Bangrak & Charoenkrung are made up of both old and new shops, art galleries, hip cafes and delectable restaurants. Here are 9 interesting spots (recommended by locals) you can hit up in less than 24 hours for an amazing day.
1. Strolling Down Bangrak District
Start off your urban adventure by exploring more of the neighbourhood on foot. It’s easily accessible via BTS Taksin station. Your route begins at Robinson Department Store, Bangrak, and takes you through streets of shops and Thai-style houses along Charoenkrung Road. (If you enjoy the taste of Thai desserts, you’ll find many stalls to try out here.)
2. Taking Fun Shots of Bangrak Fire Station
One of the neighbourhood’s major landmarks is the Bangrak Fire Station. Visitors always drop by to take photos of this majestic structure at the very end of Charoenkrung 36. Sitting alongside the Chao Phraya River, this well-aged fire station is over 120 years old and boasts Neo-Palladian architecture, making it a very unique building in the middle of Bangkok.
3. Visit Bangrak Post Office
Coming back onto the main road of Charoenkrung takes you to another major landmark, the Bangrak Post Office. This huge building is made up of neutral tones, but offers visitors some really great angles to take photos in. If you’d like, step inside and learn a little more: the building now acts as the headquarters of the Thailand Creative Design Centre.
4. Get Creative with the Street Art on Charoenkrung 32
Like Melbourne, Sao Paolo and Florence, the walls along Charoenkrung 32 showcase the works from some of Bangkok’s talented street artists. Appreciate and enjoy the amazing combination of colours and art styles with your eyes and camera lens.
5. Explore Warehouse 30
If you’re ready to escape the Bangkok heat, it’s time for you to find Warehouse 30. Located around halfway into Charoenkrung 32, this old warehouse was converted into a creative space for the local art community to gather in. There’s an art gallery, co-working space, cafe, and weekend markets selling organic goods, clothing and accessories.
6. Find Your Energy Boost at The Coffee Club
The local art scene is impressive in its own right, but by now, you should be ready for lunch (and dessert!). Head out toward Charoenkrung 30 for a hearty meal by the river at The Coffee Club at River City. Enjoy popular Western brunch favourites, such as toasts, eggs and pasta dishes. Then, you can wrap up your meal with a rich freak shake or tasty cake before heading out for more adventure.
7. Discover Classic Thai Arts in River City Bangkok
Now, before you fall into that food coma, know that you still have 3 more spots to visit! River City is also famous for housing numerous Thai art and antique shops throughout the complex. From delicately carved Buddhist statues to beautiful oil paintings, you’ll find all sorts of intriguing collectibles here.
8. Step into Holy Rosary Church
A short walk from River City is Bangkok’s famous Catholic Holy Rosary Church. More than 200 years old, this Gothic-styled building faces the Chao Phraya River, hiding a gorgeous interior worth visiting.
9. Relax After Your Busy Day with Viva Aviv The River
As the sun starts setting, your busy day of discovering a different face of Bangkok comes to an end. We suggest wrapping it all up with dinner at Viva Aviv The River, another excellent cafe and bar to try out. With both classic and quirky drinks, the international menu perfectly complements the breezy atmosphere.
The restaurant is divided into 3 parts: the soft and comfy indoor, air conditioned zone, the bar with its pirate ship theme, and the riverside outdoor zone. Let your taste buds celebrate a day well spent with the delightful European and zesty Thai items on the menu, and wash it all down with a cool drink. Of course, every adventure is twice as fun with the right travel partners. We hope you enjoyed yours!!!!
